SD Surf Film Festival makes a splash with Best of Fest

Five-week celebration comes to La Jolla August 18

Those who missed out on last May’s San Diego Surf Film Festival — I was surfing the net that weekend — are about to be tossed a life preserver.

Huey, the God of Surf, has granted a reprieve. Beginning August 18 and continuing every Thursday evening for the next four weeks, all of the award-winning titles will be brought back in a “Best of the Fest” series.

The Surf & Cine Spectacular kicks off with an encore presentation of this year’s festival favorite, Bodysurfin’ the Movie. Screened in conjunction with next weekend’s World Bodysurfing Championships in Oceanside, the red carpet will host a bevy of the best bodysurfers in the world as they check for equipment malfunctions in preparation of the big event. Admission to the opening night screening is free.

Having flown the coop of Bird’s Surf Shed, the SDSFF Best of Fest now drops anchor at La Jolla’s Misfit Pictures HQ, 565 Pearl Street. It’s the new command post of festival creators, directors, and producers Petra and Pierce Kavanagh.

Screenings start a 7 p.m. Here’s a complete rundown of the next five weeks:

August 18: Bodysurfin’ the Movie, winner of the Spirit of Fest Award and Best Short.

August 25: Sea Level TV, recipient of this year’s Emerging Filmmakers award.

September 1: Deep Islands and Man of the Sea, both Honorable Mention conferees.

September 7: Dirty Old Wedge (Best Feature) and Light Therapy (Best Cinematography).

September 15: Best of Fest Shorts, 2011-2016.
