San Diego musicians busy writing books

All words, no music

Kevin Lydy joins the list of local musicians who have published books.

Area musicians who’ve moonlighted as authors over the past year include Ben Johnson, Alfred Howard, JD Boucharde, Wayne Riker, and former Bauhaus bassist David J. Add to that list of literary locals Kevin Lydy (Vinyl Pirates, Samz Jam, Scott Samuels), who says his new book, Around Every Corner, is “inspired by people and places in San Diego. There are nine short stories in the book, with themes ranging from mortality to love.”

The native San Diegan, who self-published via Create Space, says, “The human condition is explored from differing perspectives in all of the pieces. Written near Moonlight Beach, they have a certain amount of the color that life in Encinitas infuses into all of those who call it home. But all of the stories contain kernels of what it is to be alive.”

Drew Andrews's (BitMaps, Album Leaf) has a new short novel out.

Other local musicians with new and upcoming books include Chad Tuthill (Irradio, Bully Blinders), who’s marketing his Harry Potterish story Lavella as a “fully immersive audiobook,” featuring his own narration, musical scores, sound design, direction, and audio production. “The story concerns the daughter of two powerful magicians in the land of Antropia,” he says, “where magic is a way of life, and her battle with the Black Witch Kurolyn and her Dark Magic Clan.”

Drew Andrews (Bit Maps, the Album Leaf) has released a short novel, The Shepherd’s Journals, while Jon Kanis is preparing Volume 2 of his local-centric Encyclopedia Walking: Pop Culture and the Alchemy of Rock ’n’ Roll. “It’s a selective anthology of my published writing, mostly featuring articles spanning the time frame of 1994 to 2014,” he says, estimating its completion before the end of the year.
