Though the new school year is well underway for Southern California high- and middle-school-aged students, some will wax up their boards for the 2015–2016 Scholastic Surf Series. The series hosts competitions on the Southern California coast for schools that have an enrolled surf team.
Competition areas are divided into three sections: San Diego County, Orange County, and L.A. to Santa Barbara. School competitions are divided into nine contest divisions: San Diego County high school divisions 1, 2, 3, 4, and middle schools, Orange County high school and middle schools, and L.A. to Santa Barbara high school and middle school. Each section consists of five events culminating with a state championship contest for both middle school and high school teams.
Featuring top youth surfers that compete in other high-level venues, these heats, with local school pride and a shot at the state championship at stake, can take on the atmosphere of a professional event.
The season kicks off at Church’s break at San Onofre State Beach where Orange County middle school divisions 1 & 2 take to the waves on Saturday, October 17, and San Diego County high school divisions 1 & 2 on Sunday, October 18.
