Scott Weiland was on fire tonight! His performance at the Music Box was energetic and loud.
Yes, Scott Weiland has issues. Yes, Scott Weiland has bad shows, and yes, he has had bad luck in 2015. The departure of long-time guitarist Doug Grean, and then the untimely death of his other guitar player, Jeremy Brown — on the day his new album, Blaster, was released — would drive any normal man to the brink.
But this is Scott Weiland. One of the few remaining proper front men the world has seen.
After waiting a long 45 minutes for ’90s emo band Icarus Line to finish their white-noise set, Weiland opened his show with Stone Temple Pilots’ “Crackerman,” which drove the crowd wild, and then he followed with seven songs from the new album mixed with Bowie’s “Jean Genie” and Velvet Revolvers’ “Do It for the Kids.” Weiland kept the STP songs to a minimum, but he raged on a smoking version of “Vasoline,” which I think is his own way of saying “f!!k you” to the critics who chided him over a bad show in Corpus Christi earlier this year.
Weiland slithered and danced all night across the stage and interacted with the fans with high fives and hand shakes. No ear monitor issues tonight, and no teleprompters were used or needed. This was the Scott Weiland of old. His current touring band consists of bassist Tommy Black, guitarist Nick Mayberry, and drumming dynamo Joey Castillo.
