It’s not a matter of people not liking classical music. I’ve been driving for Uber here and there for some extra income and I always have classical music playing via Spotify. What usually ensues is a conversation a little like this:
- Me: Sorry about the classical music, I write about it so I push it on everyone I can.
- Passenger: Classical music is great. I’ve been meaning to go check it out.
- Me: You should!
- Passenger: Where is it?
I’m not kidding. People do not resist classical music but they also don’t go searching for it. People love the music they are presented.
You might be surprised at how many people vaguely remember some classical music from piano lessons as a kid or a music appreciation class in college. Put a couple drinks in them and they start air-conducting Beethoven's Symphony No. 3. No joke.
Sometimes we talk about singing and opera. That’s my favorite. Here’s how that one breaks down:
- Passenger: I think opera would be cool to go to. When is the next one?
- Me: Well, the next one is at the end of January 2016. Opera happens 12 nights per year at San Diego Opera so you really have to be on your game to catch it.
- Passenger: That’s a bummer.
- Me: Ya.
