Roughly one in four La Mesa locals are falling for a police sting operation in which officers employ an under-aged decoy to approach liquor-store customers and ask them to supply the minors with alcohol, according to figures released by La Mesa Police on March 23.
Using $23,629 in grant monies from California Alcoholic Beverage Control (La Mesa was one of 47 cities statewide receiving funding for the effort), officers since last July have conducted eight "shoulder tap" operations, visiting 53 local businesses and contacting 127 patrons in search of booze for minors.
Thirty-two of those approached by the decoy found themselves under arrest soon thereafter — 29 for actually providing the alcohol, two for other outstanding warrants, and one on a methamphetamine charge.
