Customs and Border Patrol officials apprehended three men early Monday morning (June 15) after they attempted an ocean swim across the border.
According to a release, the trio was observed shortly after midnight paddling north in the Pacific Ocean from Tijuana. Two of the swimmers were intercepted by a Border Patrol vessel in the water; the third was apprehended shortly after swimming to shore in the U.S.
After determining their identities, all three of the Mexican nationals were charged with attempting to enter the country illegally. Each already had a prior immigration violations record; two of the unnamed men also had criminal records in the United States.
Authorities have been reporting a rise in attempted ocean crossings, including several arrests announced in recent weeks tied to a gang of smugglers using jet skis to ferry the undocumented to points in Coronado and Imperial Beach.
