Established in January 1990, the San Diego Anglers is a saltwater fishing club dedicated to the preservation of marine sport-fishing. They take children in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County program out on the bay for a day of fishing, host seminars, barbeques on the beach, and charters aboard sport-fishing vessels.
This Sunday, June 14, two piers in San Diego Bay will be teeming with the young and their parents during the Family Fishing Tournament, hosted by San Diego Anglers and open to students age 16 and under. Mackerel, spotted bay bass, rays, and sand sharks are the normal catch, along with the occasional halibut.
When asked, “Did you learn a lot about fishing?” a child at the event last year said “Not really. I came to teach my dad how to fish. He has never gone before; it was my friend and his dad that taught me.”
The tournament will be held at Bayside Park Pier, at 999 Bayside Parkway in Chula Vista, and Pepper Park Pier, at 3299 Tidelands Avenue, in National City. Entrants need be accompanied by an adult.
Check-in is at 6:30 a.m. and the tournament begins at 7. At noon there will be weigh-in and an awards ceremony at each pier.
For questions, contact the San Diego Anglers at 760-585-6357.
