San Diego has reported a record number of cases of whooping cough cases this year, and according to the county's public health officer, most of those cases involved people who had, in fact, been immunized against the disease. Now vaccine advocates fear a backlash against their entire movement.
"You already have a bunch of nutjobs out there on the Internet denying that there's a problem," says self-identified hardcore vaccinist Valerie Chin. "And then a story like this comes out, and it just encourages them. Obviously, there's something terribly wrong in this particular instance, but that doesn't mean that preventable diseases aren't a real issue. I mean, it's not like campus rape."
