As if winter never happened

Week-end fish report

½ Day - ¾ Day: The local ½ day boats are still either picking at the edge for Rockfish, Sculpin and Bass or looking for the Yellowtail still holding in 160’ of water off the canyon edge. ¾ day rides are focusing on the strong Yellowtail and Lingcod bite at the Coronado Islands.

1 Day to 2.5 Day: 2014’s great fishing has carried over into this year as if winter never happened. The Yellowtail, Rockfish and Lingcod are biting well from north of San Diego south to Colonet. Bluefin Tuna and good numbers of Yellowtail are still holding in the Cortez Bank area.

Long-Range - Baja: The Excel and Red Rooster III have been getting good numbers on the big 200 lb-plus Yellowfin Tuna at the Hurricane Bank. Wahoo are still the main catch at Alijos Rocks. Yellowtail, Pargo and Sierra are dominating the reports out of La Paz and the East Cape.

Freshwater: The Trout bite has been an off and on endeavor and lake to lake the results vary weekly. Seems about five days after stock they start turning on a little. Holding up their end of the bargain, the Largemouth Bass are starting to get active in Otay, Murray and Jennings.

Whale Report: The gray whales continue to pass close to San Diego as usual during calving season in the Baja lagoons. Due to the warm conditions this year, some cows have already calved and are heading back up the line towards Alaska, giving whale-watchers double odds on sightings.

Trout plants: 02/18/15 Poway (2000), 02/20/15 Santee Lakes (1000) 02/25/15 Dixon (1500). Wohlford (1500)
