Authorities in Santee are looking to the public for help in identifying a suspect accused of using a "skimmer" device to steal debit card information from patrons of a local bank.
On the afternoon of November 27, an ATM technician discovered the skimmer attached to an automated teller located at Mission Federal Credit Union on Town Center Parkway in Santee. The device is capable of capturing credit card numbers and PIN codes entered by users of the machine, which are then stored on a memory card and can be used to produce bogus replica cards.
Sheriff's deputies say that they believe the device was on the machine for less than half an hour, despite the discovery time being listed as 12:30 p.m. and released photos of the suspect appearing to have been taken after nightfall. They say that the memory card storing stolen information was recovered and no customer data is believed to have been captured by thieves in relation to the incident.
