One of the myths about San Diego County is that it is a great place to retire — wonderful climate, lots of golf courses, etc. To be sure, the county was once a retirement haven for ex-military people, but that has not been true for decades.
WalletHub, the statistical aggregator that reports on differences among cities, metro areas, and states, is out with a study on the best places to retire. The variables include affordability, activities (availability of senior centers and fishing, hiking, and golf facilities, etc.), air and water quality, crime rate, and healthcare quality.
Out of 150 cities, San Diego comes in 59th, dragged down by cost of living. Oceanside comes in 90th and Chula Vista 130th, also whacked by cost of living. The three top spots are Tampa, Scottsdale, and Boise. The three worst places are Providence, Rhode Island, and Jersey City and Newark, New Jersey.
