The idea could cause vertigo: on Saturday, April 25, Ion Theatre will stage-read four new plays starting at 11:00 a.m.
Each script has already been work-shopped with readings and feedback from preview audiences. And it’s not just a second-round look at re-worked plays. It’s a contest to see which of the four the company will take to New York for an Off-Broadway production at the Peter J. Sharp Theater, on West 42nd Street, this June and July.
The plays are:
11:00. Sea of Souls, “a mystery with music and hope” by Glenn Paris and Claudio Raygoza, with original music by Linda Libby. Set in New York City in the 1970s, a folk singer abandons her fiancé to search for clues to the death of her mother, 25 years earlier, in the hills of West Virginia. Paris and Raygoza co-direct.
2:00. Ryes by Claudio Raygoza. In this satire about history and Hollywood, a “newly discovered Civil War heroine” prompts a clash between a movie star and a New Orleans museum. Claudio Raygoza directs.
5:00. Grove by Glenn Paris. “An illness looms, and long-buried secrets unravel as brothers reconnect in a frozen Boston suburb.” Kim Strassburger directs the “family drama with a dash of magic.”
8:00. 6 by Claudio Raygoza. As the mother and brother of a missing climatologist wrestle with human trafficking, a category 6 hurricane powers toward the coast of Texas. Raygoza directs.
Throughout the marathon, members of the company will be barbecuing and “providing other goodies.”
“The creation and work-shopping of these four new plays,” says Raygoza, has been exhilarating, challenging and has stretched the entire company. This year we are stretching in every way imaginable — including the ‘why’ we do it.”
Ion will announce the winner on Saturday, May 2 at the “I’ll Take Manhattan Gala Celebration.” The event will also celebrate the company’s 10th anniversary with, among other things, a brief history: “10 years in 10 minutes.”
