½ Day - ¾ Day: Rockfish, sculpin and calico bass are the main catch on the ½ day boats, with the occasional yellowtail. Kayakers and private boaters are getting good action on the yellowtail around La Jolla Canyon. ¾ day trips to the Coronado Islands are still putting up good numbers on the yellows as well as lingcod, rockfish and bonito. The San Diego Bay is producing a good spotted bay bass and halibut bite for spring.
1 Day to 2.5 Day: Bluefin tuna have been caught this past week within 20 miles of San Diego. The good yellowtail bite in the warmer-than-normal water continues south until it meets the cooler plume from Ensenada south to San Martin Island where Rockfish and lingcod are coming in good numbers and with size along with a few yellowtail.
Long-Range - Baja: Still fishing a summer/winter mix down in the southern Baja, with striped marlin, good sized yellowfin tuna, and roosterfish showing along with the normal pargo, cabrilla and sierra for this time of year. Yellowtail are showing well from Bahia De Los Muertos and Cerralvo Island north to Mulege.
Freshwater: The big fish continue to be caught in the area lakes, including a new lake record 4.72 pound redear sunfish at Diamond Valley Lake. Low lake levels have concentrated the fish and, along with the trout stocks, seem to have fired up the big bass and catfish. There are still a lot of trophy trout being caught at all stocked lakes.
Whale Report: They are still seeing gray whales in the calving grounds at Bahia Magdalena and San Ignacio Lagoon in Baja which is a good sign that whale-watchers still have good odds of sightings off the coast as they make their way back north. Even so, there is a lot of concern in the scientific community about the large number of dead younger whales this year. There was a similar situation in 1999 where over 800 whales were found washed up during the migratory season. Originally, pollution and radiation were thought to be the culprits, but studies showed that it was starvation.
