Yesterday's fishing report is no joke

Since my report is about yesterday's fishing, April 1, I have to note that this is the real deal and not an April Fool's gag. About the only thing one could say as a joke is that the fishing went stone cold and the water is going to be freezing. Though I don't think many would buy that. So, here's my cat's birthday fish count. Yup, true that, too. It was my cat's birthday and she got some fresh fish and a bit of Panque con Nuez.

The yellowtail are back into the half-day picture, with many private boaters and especially kayakers landing good quality 15 to 30 pounders a mile off La Jolla Shores.

San Diego area lakes are churning out large fish, partially due to trout stocks and low water levels concentrating the fishery. Big blue cats, largemouth bass, redear sunfish and trophy trout have hit the net in the last couple weeks.

The northern Baja coast is a mix, with consistent rockfish and lingcod and an off and on yellowtail bite producing one or two of the feisty jacks per rod when found. As in the San Diego area, they are sliding up the water column from the yoyo iron and dropper loop depth to the fly-line and surface iron zone as breezers go by.

Down in Baja Sur and around to the East Cape the water temp is about 5-7 degrees warmer than normal for this time of year and the fishing and weather have been outstanding. Lots of marlin, dorado, roosters, some wahoo and tuna outside and even pompano inshore with the sierra. Yellowtail are showing well from Cerralvo to Espirito Santos.

Here are your San Diego dock totals:

Chubasco 2 Sportfishing hosted 20 anglers aboard 1 boat and reported 2 yellowtail, 1 sculpin, 6 rockfish, 1 lingcod and 47 calico bass caught.

Fisherman's Landing sent 35 anglers out on 2 boats and reported 51 rockfish, 2 calico bass, 1 halibut, 4 lingcod and 5 sculpin for the days total.

122 anglers aboard 4 boats out of H&M Landing caught 110 yellowtail, 2 bonito, 15 barracuda, 9 sculpin, 154 rockfish, 2 lingcod, 2 sand bass and 1 calico bass.

Helgren's Oceanside Sportfishing hosted 54 anglers aboard 2 boats and reported 5 sheephead, 20 sculpin, 12 sand bass, 11 calico bass, 54 rockfish, 4 lingcod, 14 bonito, 6 whitefish and 59 yellowtail caught.

58 anglers aboard 2 boats out of Point Loma Sportfishing sacked up 7 sculpin, 31 rockfish and 91 yellowtail.

Seaforth Sportfishing sent 126 anglers out aboard 3 boats for a total catch of 122 yellowtail, 1 whitefish, 14 vermilion rockfish, 1 sculpin, 106 rockfish, 6 bonito, 1 sheephead and 7 calico bass.
