The San Diego Symphony is reporting that all-world violinist Hilary Hahn has had to cancel her San Diego appearance.
Hahn was to be the featured artist for the Symphony’s opening weekend concerts of October 11, 12, and 13. The ever-present, ever-reliable, ever-capable concertmaster, Jeff Thayer, will take on the soloist duties in Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy.
Hahn has not canceled her performance willy-nilly but is under doctor’s orders. She has a strained muscle and it has not sufficiently healed in time for the October concerts.
This isn’t the NFL so there is no cortisone shot, or domestic violence, or child abuse... yes, that’s a cheap shot.
We all wish Ms. Hahn a speedy recovery so she can continue making some of the best music around.
Bruch’s Fantasy was composed for the famous virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate. While it would have been great to hear Hilary Hahn play the piece, I’m excited to hear Mr. Thayer.
Whenever our local musicians can show off their talent, I’m all in.
