Edmund Seshie and Abdul Rezak Shaib pleaded guilty yesterday (September 17) to being part of a West African-based combination car theft/identity theft ring. They purchased stolen credit cards and counterfeit driver's licenses in bulk from a Singapore-based "carder" website. These carders buy, sell, and trade credit-card data stolen from phishing sites or from data breaches at retail stores.
The stolen identities were then used to fraudulently purchase vehicles from American-based car dealerships. The two defendants bought vehicles worth almost half a million dollars before they were caught.
