Shame heaped on Justice Scalia

“He’s one of the justices who has consistently voted against women.”

Protesters lined West Harbor Drive in front of the Manchester Grand Hyatt during the lunch hour on Thursday demonstrating against a host of perceived injustices at the hands of the federal Supreme Court. From women’s-rights issues to Citizens United, the decisions all shared a common thread: support from Justice Antonin Scalia, who was invited to speak at the California State Bar Convention.

"We're protesting Supreme Court decisions against women, minorities, and workers, and also the Citizens United decision," said lawyer Kate Yavenditti. "Justice Scalia is speaking at a luncheon today, and his appearance sparked us to action — he's one of the justices who has consistently voted against women and made horrendous statements against women's issues and gay-rights issues. We don't think that he should be highlighted as a part of the convention."

Activists donned paper masks of conservative Supreme Court justices and brandished posters with slogans such as, "Viagra okay, birth control no?" and "If men could get pregnant, birth control would be from gumball machines and bacon-flavored!"

The protest was sponsored by the National Lawyers' Guild and Women Occupy San Diego, one of the more vocal and enduring factions of the Occupy movement that began in the fall of 2011.
