This is a big week for classical music. Let's take a look at what's going down. There are three opera concerts that are going to be pretty good.
The first is the continuing Opera Wednesdays at the La Jolla Community Center. This month, Opera Wednesdays features baritone Michael Blinco. Blinco won the vocal division of the Musical Merit competition this year. This event is in its sixth month and appears to be picking up momentum. The concert is at 7 p.m. and should run about 90 minutes.
On Friday, October 10, there is a concert being produced by Bernardo Bermudez and Victoria Robertson. The title of the concert is Duetto. I think this means they'll be performing duets. However, this concert isn’t all opera. There are several duet selections from Broadway and popular music such as All I Ask of You and Time to Say Goodbye.
Saturday, October 11, brings this year's edition of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions. The event is scheduled to run from 11 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Point Loma Nazarene University. The Met Audition is great in a unique way every year. There are the young singers full of hope and ambition putting forth their best arias, and then there is the audience. The audience is full of voice teachers, older singers, and much older singers, and everyone has an opinion about what the young ones should or should not be signing. Everyone is concerned if one of the signers gives an aria that will “ruin their voice.” Oh, it’s not to be missed if you want to get a crash course in opera pedagogy, opinion and crazy.
There’s no crazy like opera crazy.
