A political action committee going by the name of Team Republicans for Utilizing Sensible Tactics (TRUST) picked up a $5000 contribution from San Diego chip-making giant Qualcomm’s PAC on August 22. Other major givers to the Washington DC–based group include David and Julia Koch, with $5000 each. The committee belongs to House Republican Fred Upton of Michigan, who chairs the powerful committee on Energy and Commerce, which has a major say in legislation affecting Qualcomm. For Democrats, Qualcomm came up with $1500 for Friends of Mary Landrieu, the senator from Louisiana, and $2000 for Colorado’s Mark Udall.
Rollcall has reported that Upton’s PAC spent over $88,000 on meals and catered fundraising events for potential donors, “including energy and commerce industry executives,” during the first half of last year. Venues included “the Cheeca Lodge & Spa, Islamorado, Fla. ($20,403); Park Hyatt Chicago, Ill. ($11,624); Chicago From the Lake, Chicago, IL. (6,326); La Playa Beach Resort, Naples, Fla. ($4,452); New York Palace Hotel, New York, N.Y. ($3,004); Ritz-Carlton Naples, Fla. ($3,498); and the Westin New York, New York, N.Y. ($533).”
Observes Rollcall, “Upton has perfected a fundraising method that not only brings in contributions from those areas in which his committee considers legislation, but lets him enjoy some of the nicer hotels, resorts, restaurants and sports events around the country.” ...
