The week kicks off with a good man doing a good thing for a good cause: Triple-Grammy winning blues artist Keb’ Mo’ will headline Scripps Concert for Cancer on Monday, May 19 at 7 p.m. at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay ( 2241 Shelter Island Drive) this is the Fourth Annual concert celebrating cancer survivorship. Tickets are $55 for general admission… UC San Diego’s The Loft (911 Lyman Lane) presents the Bob Long Trio featuring Dave Marr on bass and Bob Weller on drums at 5:00 p.m. Come back at 9:00 p.m. to catch Brain Tweet with Zach Chase Lipton on bass/sax, Tobin Chodos on piano and Matthew Smith on drums. Both Loft gigs are free!

Tuesday 20
Jazz Live, a KSDS production, returns with veteran alto-saxophonist Bobby Watson performing with the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts at City College’s Saville Theatre (14th & C Street), at 8:00 p.m. (doors open at 7:30). Free to Jazz 88 members, $10 general admission.

Wednesday 21
The Young Lions Series continues at Croce’s Park West (2760 Fifth Avenue), this week with drummer Ryan Shaw leading a quartet. It all begins at 7:00 p.m. for the modest cover of $5 … energetic folks can then speed over to the Seven Grand Whiskey Bar (3054 University Avenue) for the Jazz Jam Session where Gilbert Castellanos lays it down with Joshua White and Rob Thorsen. 9:00 p.m. No cover, musicians bring your horns!

Swedish drummer/percussionist Kjell Nordeson will be playing a rare San Diego date of solo percussion at the CPMC Experimental Theater, UCSD, (9500 Gilman Drive) at 8:00 p.m. The concert is free and Nordeson is not to be missed.

Friday 23
Saxophonist David Negrete returns from Japan to reconvene his Tribe of D band featuring Joshua White on piano, Rob Thorsen on bass and Dan Schnelle on drums for a performance at Dizzy’s (4275 Mission Bay Drive) 8:00 p.m. $15 cover … Vocalist Allison Adams Tucker joins with pianist Danny Green and drummer Julien Cantelm for a gig at the San Diego Airport Terminal 2 Baggage Claim (3225 N. Harbor Drive) they’ll be there from 7:00 p.m. till 9:15 p.m. Free! … Composer Joe Garrison and Night People perform at the Seaside Center for Spiritual Living (1613 Lake Drive, Encinitas) $15 at the door, downbeat is at 7:30 p.m.

Trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos is doing a Tribute to Tito Puente at 98 Bottles (2400 Kettner Boulevard) with Ramon Banda on drums, Tony Banda on bass, Irving Flores on piano, Tommy Aros on percussion and Pablo Calogero on reeds. Also on the gig is Trio Gadjo. There will be two sets: 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 at the door… San Diego jazz pioneer saxophonist Joe Marillo celebrates his 82nd birthday at Dizzy’s, with special guest Jim Weis on alto sax plus Reka Parker on piano, Jeff Blanco on bass, and Bob Daniels on drums. Concert starts at 8:00 p.m. and will set you back $15.

The Matt Smith Neu Jazz Trio open a busy Sunday by hosting a jam session with Smith on drums, Ed Kornhauser on piano, and Antar Martin on bass at 98 Bottles from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. No cover, bring your instruments and sit in! … the Jazz 88/Francis Parker Summer Jazz Workshop Faculty perform at Croce’s Park West with Derek Cannon on trumpet, Justin Grinnell on bass, Nate Jarrell on guitar, Melonie Grinnell on piano, Danny Green on piano and Mike Holguin on drums. Students 18 and under are encouraged to sit in. 6:00 p.m. $5 cover … Drummer Nathan Hubbard joins with Arizona friends in the band The Scorpion Decides featuring Keith Kelly on woodwinds, Branson NeJame on keyboards, and Jerome Salazar on bass for a combo CD release party and Hubbard birthday bash at the Taoist Sanctuary (4229 Park Boulevard) 8 p.m. $5 cover.
