Some of the best shopping found in Hillcrest begins on the 3800 block of Fifth Avenue and runs through the 3900 block of Fifth. On that stretch you will find Buffalo Exchange, Lost and Found, Flashbacks, Luigi Vera, and Urban Outfitters. Pixie Guzman works as a buyer at the popular resale shop, Buffalo Exchange.
“I have found some pretty crazy things mixed in with people’s clothes [that they are trying to sell] while working at Buffalo Exchange,” said Guzman. Among them has been everything from dirty underwear, to drugs, to spiders.
The 27-year-old wore a mix of vintage and new items.
Her hat and dress are both Buffalo Exchange scores. Her oversized mustard sweater is a Forever 21 purchase. She bought her black, western-inspired, fringed, cross-body bag at the swap meet.
“I found these boots at a thrift store years ago,” said Guzman.
Guzman’s favorite wardrobe item is her collection of turquoise jewelry.
“The jewelry I have on is from the Buffalo Exchange in Tucson. We can’t sell jewelry at the Buffalo exchange in Hillcrest because you need a pawn license,” she told me, “but if you go to Buffalo Exchange’s in other states they have great jewelry.”
27-year-old Joseph Martinez was on his lunch break and headed toward Luigi Vera when I spotted him. He works as the Visual Merchandiser at Flashbacks.
He wore a vintage fedora and a pair of pre-loved leather loafers from Buffalo Exchange paired with a unique, mauve-shade vintage leather vest from Flashbacks. The tail affixed to his jeans was purchased from Luigi Vera. His tank is from Foreign Exchange in Fashion Valley Mall.
“Since I work and live in Hillcrest, I do a lot of my shopping here,” said Martinez
Martinez’s favorite local shopping spot is All Saints located inside Fashion Valley Mall. His list of fashion pet peeves include socks with sandals, anything Ed Hardy, and girls that wear sloppy pony-tails.
“There are so many options for women’s hair I don’t understand why they would put it into a messy pony-tail,” said Martinez.
Lastly, I found Christine Tricker at Urban Outfitters. The 31-year-old almost always wears head to toe black.
“It’s just easy,” she said “I love everything dark and goth. My favorite holiday is Halloween.”
Everything she wore (other than her sweater from Brandy Melville) was purchased at Urban Outfitters, including her oversized, gothic-inspired black hat.
Her favorite local store is the DAV thrift store off Jamacha in Spring Valley.
