Edward Charles Peek admitted grand theft and was immediately sentenced to 16 months’ custody on Wednesday, March 12. He could have received as much as three years in prison for stealing what investigators described as memorabilia from Reuben H. Fleet’s military career.
Fleet, most notably an aircraft designer and consultant preceding and during World War II, passed away in San Diego in 1975 at the age of 88.
Last month, on February 11, the San Diego County sheriff released a statement announcing Peek’s arrest on suspicion of burglary. Both Peek and his girlfriend had property “on their person” that linked them to items taken from a home in the 3400 block of Felicita Road in Escondido.
More stolen property was discovered in Peek’s storage unit and his girlfriend’s vehicle, according to sheriff’s sergeant Daniel Deese. Besides items from Fleet’s military career, antique jewelry, furniture, and oil paintings were recovered as well.
Twenty-nine-year old Peek has an arrest record in San Diego County dating back to at least 2003, for petty thefts, burglary, stolen vehicle, and felony evade with reckless driving.
Two years ago, in the spring of 2012, Peek pleaded guilty to DUI and admitted three prior DUI convictions — which raised his new offense to felony level. In that case, he was sentenced to 365 days in local jail.
