KSDS Jazz 88 continues their summer concert series with the Henry Franklin Quartet at the SD City College Saville Theatre (14th & C Street). Bassist Franklin will be joined by Theo Saunders on piano, Chuck Manning on tenor saxophone, and Ramon Banda on drums. Free to Jazz 88 members and $10 general admission. Doors open at 7:30 p.m… the Moonlight Serenade Orchestra will be playing at the Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park (1549 El Prado) at 6:00 p.m. Free to the public.

The Mingus Ensemble under the direction of flautist James Newton is hitting it at Dizzy’s (4275 Mission Bay Drive) featuring Kiefer Shackelford, Erik Shiboski, Forrest Kazuo Mitchell, Jonah Levine, Zach Ramacier, and Masai Marcellin. Starts at 8:00 pm, $15 cover … trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos hosts the Young Lions Series at Croce’s Park West (2760 Fifth Avenue) at 7:00 p.m., $5 cover, then he’s off to the Latin Jazz Jam at Seven Grand (3054 University Avenue) where the downbeat hits at 9:00 p.m. No cover, musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments.
