BrainTweet plays the Loft at UCSD (911 Lyman lane). The band features Boaz Roberts, Kyle Blair, Zach Chase Lipton, Tobin Chodos, and Kevin Higuchi. 8 p.m. FREE!

Wednesday 26
Trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos does his dual duty thing, presenting the Young Lions at Croce’s Park West (2760 Fifth Avenue), this week featuring high school bassist Max Vinetz. 7 p.m. $5 cover. Then he’s off the Jazz Jam Session at Seven Grand (3054 University Avenue) featuring Joshua White, Rob Thorsen, and Kevin Higuchi. 9 p.m. No cover. Musicians bring your horns.

Thursday 27
Scott Walton and Gilbert Isben perform a concert of double-bass and lute at the Cuyamaca College Theater (900 Rancho San Diego Parkway). Concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8. Composer Amina Figarova brings her sextet to the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library (1008 Wall Street). This concert, alas, is sold out.

Friday 28
Joe Garrison presents his large ensemble Night People, with special guest kora virtuoso Amadou Fall to the Loft at UCSD. Tickets are $12 general admission, $6 UCSD students. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., concert begins at 8 p.m. Gilbert Castellanos is at the Westgate Hotel (1055 2nd Avenue) with bassist Katie Thiroux and a pianist TBA. No cover, $20 food/beverage minimum.

Saturday 1
Guitarist Peter Sprague’s Bop Moderno with Tripp Sprague, Gilbert Castellanos, Gunnar Biggs, and Duncan Moore play at Point Loma Nazarene University (3900 Lomaland Drive), 8 p.m. Guitarists Fred Benedetti and George Svoboda hook up at Dizzy’s (4275 Mission Bay Drive), 8 p.m. $15

Sunday 2
Gypsy Groove play hot jazz at Le Papagayo (1002 North Coast Highway 101) in Leucadia. There’s a Dexter Gordon tribute brewing at Dizzy’s with Gerard Nolan, Bob Magnusson, John Opferkuch, and Duncan Moore. 7 p.m. $15
