Saxophonist David Borgo is joined by pianist Tobin Chodos and bassist Tim McNalley for happy-hour at UC San Diego’s the Loft. Free admission. 5:00-6:00 pm.

Wednesday 19
Trumpeter Jeff Kaiser will appear with multimedia artist Jason Ponce in a free concert in the French Parlor Room, Camino Hall at USD. Concert begins at 7:30. Trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos presents the Young Lions Series featuring Kyle Myers at Croce’s Park West (2760 Fifth Avenue). He’ll play the first set, then head off to his own weekly jam session at Seven Grand (3054 University Avenue). It’s Latin week with Irving Flores, Rob Thorsen, Mike Holguin, and Charlie Chavez.

Percussionist Nathan Hubbard leads a trio featuring bassist Harley Magsino and Kevin Jones for a night of free-bop at Seven Grand. 21+ No cover, 9 p.m. If Dixieland is your thing, head to the Jazz 88 happy hour at the Lafayette Hotel (2223 El Cajon Boulevard) for the Euphoria Brass Band. 5 p.m., $5 cover. Gilbert Castellanos and his Latin Jazz Quintet play at Copley Symphony Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Bonnie Wright’s Fresh Sound series continues with a rare performance by harpist Zeena Parkins at Bread & Salt (1955 Julian). 7:30 p.m., $15. Guitarist Jaime Valle leads a trio with bassist Gunnar Biggs and drummer Duncan Moore at Northern Spirits Jazz Club (727 W. San Marcos Boulevard). Saxophonists Charlie Arbelaez and Robert Dove present “Battle of the Saxes,” with pianist Jason Shattil, bassist Hamilton Price, and drummer Kevin Higuchi at 98 Bottles (2400 Kettner Boulevard). 8 p.m., $15 cover. Gilbert Castellanos plays at the Westgate Hotel 1055 2nd Avenue with pianist Mikan Zlatkovich and bassist Rob Thorsen.

Saturday 22
Trombonist Matt Hall teams up with trumpeter Curtis Taylor and saxophonist Charlie Arbelaez for “A Night of Badass Bebop,” at 98 Bottles. Guitarist Dusty Brough is having a CD release party for “Tortoise in the Presence of a Goldfish,” with Julien Cantelm and others at 3rd Space (4610 Park Boulevard). 9 p.m. $10. Saxophonist Mark Lessman will appear with pianist Rob Whitlock at Amaya (1205 Prospect) at 7 p.m., no cover. Guitarist Alex Lopez and I Son Pa Ti will perform Latin jazz at the Turquoise Bar & Grill (873 Turquoise Street), no cover.

Sunday 23
Nathan Hubbard will be playing the New Encinitas Philharmonic, featuring Ellen Weller, Peter Kuhn, Kris Apple, Caetlin Crow, Jon Garner, Harley Magsino, Jerome Salazar, Jesse Charnow, Laurel Grinnell, and Jeanette Kangas. At the Taoist Sanctuary (4229 Park Boulevard). 8 p.m. $5. LA violinist Nora Germain will play with guitarist Bob Boss and bassist Marshall Hawkins at Dizzy’s (4275 Mission Bay Drive), 8 p.m., $15.
