The city is getting ready to spend $280,000 for “artwork design, fabrication, and installation” to decorate the soon-to-be constructed Hillcrest and Mission Hills library. “The budget is all-inclusive and must cover all costs associated with the conceptualization and realization of the artwork(s), including all travel expenses,” says a recent request for qualifications with a deadline of January 6. Being a local isn’t a requirement. “The City encourages Artists who work in all media and whose artworks are representative of all schools and styles and Artists who represent diversity in gender, age, socio-economic class, geographic location, religion, sexual orientation, skills and abilities, ethnicity, among other qualities to apply.”
The 15,000-square-foot facility, designed by the architectural firm of Mosher Drew, is to be located on the south side of Washington Street, between Front and Albatross, just north of Florence Elementary School. “Hillcrest is a trendy and hip neighborhood,” notes the document. “A hub of locally owned businesses, diverse boutiques, thrift stores, diners and restaurants and bars, Hillcrest is one of the more intensely developed neighborhoods in Uptown.”
