WalletHub used several criteria in ranking cities: the poverty rate, percentage of households receiving public assistance, unemployment rate, percentage of homeless population, non-business bankruptcy filings, and the school dropout rate.
The cities with the lowest percentage of people in need are Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Overland Park, Kansas; and Madison, Wisconsin. Of the ten cities with the highest percentage of economically disadvantaged, three are in California: Stockton, San Bernardino, and Fresno. The city whose population is the worst off of the 150: Detroit.
