It’s time to walk the talk folks. The musical community in San Diego is talking about saving the opera and the death of classical music. The simple solution is to get out there and go to a concert.
There are several opportunities this weekend. There is the large scale production of Don Quixote at San Diego Opera.
There is the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition at USD.
There is the Mission Valley United Methodist Church’s Lenten concert with an orchestra comprised of players from The San Diego Symphony.
The Project Trio will be performing on Sunday with the San Diego Symphony.
There is Haydn’s Creation at the Balboa Theater.
Pinchas Zukerman and Yefim Bronfman are playing Symphony Hall.
The Bach Collegium is performing Bach’s Mass in B minor at St. Brigid Catholic church in PB.
South Coast Chamber Choir is also performing Bach this weekend at St. Paul’s Cathedral.
Haydn’s Creation is a presentation of the La Jolla Music Society. Jane Glover brings The Music of the Baroque, a Chicago-based group, to San Diego’s Balboa Theater on Friday April 4th at 7:00 PM. Soprano Elizabeth Futral is featured in this performance. San Diego has heard here at the opera as Violetta in La Traviata and as Nedda opposite Jose Cura in Pagliacci.
Zukerman and Bronfman just played their program in Chicago and now they’re in San Diego. Both these performers are frequent guests in San Diego.
The pick of the weekend is The Project Trio. These guys are unique in the way they communicate music and one of the most exciting groups going in classical music — if you can call what they do classical. It is classical and much, much more.
