I caught 25-year-old Leanna Pollen on her way to work at Kate Spade on Girard Avenue. She resembled a young Jackie Kennedy dressed in a classic black and white color palette. The feminine shape of her dress and details on her patent leather belt gave her look a fresh and sophisticated twist. Pollen's patterned dress is from Kate Spade. Her blue earrings ($38), identical in shade to her eyes, are also a Kate Spade buy. Her black belt with bow detail was a Nordstrom purchase. Pollen mixed in inexpensive accessories to finish off her look. She wore a cross-body black leather purse, that at first glance could pass for a shoulder strap Coach bag. The purse retails for
$26.99 compared to Coach’s version, which retails for $198. Pollen also wore a pair of shiny patent-leather ballet flats also from Target.
Pollen’s favorite stores include Kate Spade and Brandy Melville.
27-year old graphic designer Daniel Barnier was meeting friends at Karl Strauss to celebrate San Diego Beer week. He looked like a Dead Poets Society cast member in his glasses, blue jacket, and khakis. Barnier's glasses are from Warby Parker and his shoes retail for $199 at Zuriick While his preppy colligate attire looked every bit Burberry, Barnier actually wore affordable duds from H&M and Forever 21. The Burberry version of his coat retails for $1,295. At H&M, Barnier spent $99.
“If Burberry weren’t so expensive that’s all I’d wear,” he told me.
Instead he copies expensive looks from half the price. Barnier’s biggest pet peeve is an ill-fitting suit. He admits that he went through a tragic fashion stage during his teen years.
“I was a teenager in the '90s, so I didn’t dress well. I used to have an understep haircut and wore those too-big skater shoes,” Barnier says with a laugh.
