Child of the ’70s

Reed at the Roxy in 1980. The ’90s? “I pretty much took that decade off.”

New music is on the way for the first time in decades from ’70s–’80s hard-rocker Rick Reed: “I hadn’t been doing much in the way of music for the past two years. I wasn’t gigging. Then I got a call from a startup label in Orange County called FB5 Records...they had collected some of the old Child stuff.”

Child is a band that started in the 1970s in San Diego featuring Reed with Thom Beebe and Steve Jumel on guitars, drummer Eddie Cota, and Andy Greenberg on bass. They performed at venues such as Neutral Grounds on University Avenue, the Bacchanal in Clairemont, Mom’s Saloon in P.B., My Rich Uncle’s on El Cajon Boulevard, and the Roxy Theater in P.B.

“I met FB5 at their office in Pasadena. They had collected a lot of that old Child material. They never told me who it was that gave it to them. But the owner of the label said they loved the stuff, and they wanted to do an album of old Child songs.” FB5 also tapped Reed to write two new songs and sing lead on Reed-Ritchotte’s Finally, featuring a list of superstar session men, including guitarist Rocket Ritchotte, Brett Tuggle (Fleetwood Mac), and Tony Franklin (Jimmy Page, Whitesnake). Finally also has a Child cover song among the tracks, but the label’s Child/Rick Reed release won’t be ready until early 2014.

We’ll Be Right Back is the tentative title,” says Reed.

Reed, who lives in Del Cerro, describes a musical lifetime of starts, stops, and near-misses. The ’90s? “I pretty much took that decade off.”

A Child band reunion may be taking shape. “We’re talking about doing a House of Blues tour.” Reed says that he, Beebe, Greenberg, and former Assassin drummer Leroy Vega have been rehearsing. “Just playing one show would be great,” says Reed, who recently turned 60. “We sound pretty good. Not a bad birthday present.”
