Francine Busby, chair of the San Diego County Democratic Party, is using U-T San Diego publisher Doug Manchester's recent purchase of eight county weeklies as a fundraising strategy.
Busby has sent fellow Democrats a letter saying, "It's a sad day for journalistic integrity in San Diego County." She cites the eight purchases and notes that, "Since acquiring the U-T, Manchester has turned it into his personal campaign machine. He showers favored candidates like Carl DeMaio, Brian Bilbray, and Kevin Faulconer with front-page editorials, fawning coverage, and full-page ads."
Therefore, she asks local Democrats to donate ten dollars to help "get the truth to the voting public."
