SOHO seeks volunteer craftsmen for Adobe University
Local preservationist group Saving Our Heritage Organisation has issued a call for participants in a renewal of its Adobe University program to train modern amateur craftsmen in the art of adobe construction.
According to a release, the new crop of volunteers will “learn historical and architectural background, technical and practical application, and about the structure of an early California adobe” while working to restore the Kimble-Wilson adobe store on Warner’s Ranch in the backcountry of northeast San Diego County. A previous incarnation of the group from the 1990s was instrumental in restoring the St. Francis Chapel in nearby Warner Springs.
The first class in the program, expected to last six months to a year, takes place this Saturday, May 18. Volunteers will learn adobe construction, preservation, and repair techniques, and will employ them in the renovation of the historic 1860s storefront.
Interested parties are invited to contact SOHO by e-mail at [email protected], and should show up with a sack lunch, clothing including a long-sleeve shirt that they’re willing to sacrifice to dirty working conditions, gloves, goggles or safety glasses, a hat, tools (axes, shovels, large pruning shears) and plenty of sunscreen.
