Benchmark Brewing sets grand opening date

A little ways back, we took a construction era sneak peek at a new business called Benchmark Brewing Company (6190 Fairmount Avenue, Suite G, Grantville). The passion project of former Alesmith brewer Matt Akin and his dad, Jim, had been on my radar since a tip from a North County brewer unearthed his central San Diego nesting place last year.

It’s been downright heartwarming to watch this father-son duo navigate the pre-open stage, getting to the point where they are finally brewing up their beers. Come the last weekend of the month, the general public will be able to get their own dose of myocardial heating when they’re allowed in to Benchmark for the company’s two-day grand opening celebration.

Though the beer list has yet to be confirmed, Benchmark’s core line-up includes a blond ale, brown ale, oatmeal stout and, as one would expect from any San Diego brewery, an IPA. But it’s likely there will be cask offerings and a number of specialty beers, if not at the opening then in the near future, based on previous conversations with the younger of the Akins.

Entry to the event is $5 per person and includes a 12-ounce pour of Benchmark beer. Tickets may be purchased online. The grand opening will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 28, and noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 29. It may be just past Father’s Day weekend, but thanks to the Akins, you should still be able to feel plenty of parent-to-offspring love.
