After car crash, Sweetwater trustee McCann out of ICU

Other victim soon back to work

As has been widely reported, Sweetwater Union High School District trustee John McCann was in a serious accident on July 24. The two- car collision occurred in Chula Vista on Telegraph Canyon Road. The police log gives the time as 4:56 p.m.

On July 25, an email was sent out on behalf of Sweetwater superintendent Ed Brand, who stated that McCann had been in a serious accident and “Full details of the incident are not known yet and are still being investigated.” The email also stated, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the McCann family during this difficult time.”

The email did not mention the condition of the other Sweetwater employee, who was driving the other vehicle involved in the collision.

The Star News reported on July 29, “Chula Vista police captain Gary Wedge said that the second person involved in a July 24 car accident that sent Sweetwater board member John McCann to the hospital is an employee for the Sweetwater Union High School district. Wedge said the 49-year-old man’s name is being withheld until the department’s investigation into the accident is complete.”

The article also states that McCann’s cell phone was impounded and that the employee suffered lacerations and had complaints of pain.

In a phone conversation today, Wedge stated that the accident report has not yet been completed; he anticipates it will be within the next day or two.

Regarding the health of both victims, Manny Rubio, director of Sweetwater’s communication and grants, responded to an email inquiry today with this message:

“Dr. Brand has been in contact with Mr. McCann and his family. I've been told that he was moved out of ICU in the last day and is making progress. I am not aware where he has been moved to or the extent of his injuries and recovery time.

As far as the other employee, I was made aware that the individual was out for a few days and should be back at work this week sometime.”
