One of the most popular events on Opening Day at the Del Mar racetrack is the Hats Contest.

Entrants are judged in five categories:

1) Most Glamorous
2) Best Fascinator
3) Best Racing Theme
4) Funniest or Most Outrageous
5) Best Flowers/All Others
Daniella Lopez was last year's opening day grand prize winner. She took home $300 and $1,700 necklace. Due to last year's victory she was unable to reenter 2013's contest. It took Lopez three months to handcraft her hat and dress combo.
20-year-old Kassidy Byers wore a hat created by Deena Von Yokes, owner and founder of Studio Savvy.
Julie Hamill found the inspiration for her hat while browsing on Amazon.
"I thought, who doesn't want a plastic inflatable horse on their head," she said with a laugh.
Carnival Cruise dance instructor Les E Sutter wore a cowboy themed hat and outfit. He was hoping to win for most outrageous
