Old Town: What the tourists wore

There is nothing worse than looking like a tourist. Out-of-towners tend to wear sensible shoes and sun hats. They’re usually pasty and constantly reapply sunblock. They like to order fish tacos coupled with oversized margaritas in novelty cups that can be kept as souvenirs. But those are just the obvious ones. We have our fair share of low key visitors in Sunny San Diego.

In Old Town I ran into dozens of tourists clogging the streets. A few nearly passed for locals.

Hillery Alley

Hillery Alley lives in North Carolina. Her southern drawl gave her away as a tourist. Alley runs an eBay vintage store for a living.

"I love vintage clothing. My favorite item of clothing is a black lacey dress from the 1960's, “she tells me.

Alley wore a layered tulle vintage skirt with a denim shirt. Her black watch was purchased in Seaport Village and her other jewelry came from online retailer, www.Jewelmint.com.

Marlin Hueser and Valerie Blum

Friends Marlin Hueser and Valerie Blum are visiting from Germany. The pair flew into San Francisco and rented a car to drive down the coast of California.

"We didn’t like L.A," Valerie said, "It was dirty and crowded,"

"We like it here," adds Marlin.

Everything they wore was from Germany other than Valerie's Levi jeans and Monica's hat that she purchased in Old Town.
