December is the month for all kinds of partying, including political. In San Diego, the season kicked off last week with “Legislative Lounge,” at downtown’s U.S. Grant Hotel, a newly instituted function by the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, led by ex-mayor Jerry Sanders. “The event should be a fun awards ceremony to recognize some of the hardest working elected officials,” wrote Sanders in his Chamber website column, called “Out and About with Jerry.”
Because he has been out of office for over a year, the Republican and local beer advocate can now freely lobby city officials without his good-old-boy style being hindered by the city’s so-called revolving door ban on influence peddling. Democratic city councilman Todd Gloria, a faithful friend of the city’s hotel lobby who of late has preferred being called “interim mayor,” keynoted. Meanwhile, over at Mission Valley’s Riverwalk Golf Club, local Democrats are holding their Holiday Party to Highlight Unity on December 15. “Mix and mingle with elected officials and candidates, including our featured guest speaker, San Diego Mayoral Candidate David Alvarez… Admission for $40 will include heavy appetizers, a taco bar, and assorted desserts. A cash bar will also be available.”
A Missouri union outfit called “Jobs with Justice” has taken political partying to another level: “Join us for our annual ‘Holiday Party with an Attitude,’ where workers vote for what person or organization wreaked the most havoc on Missouri working families this year. Last year’s winners were Representative Darrell Issa (CA) in Kansas City and the Missouri Restaurant Association in St. Louis.” Issa will get better treatment closer to home Saturday, December 14, when the San Diego County Federation of Republican Women stages its “Convention & Holiday Party.” The event features a “Fashion Show & Shopping,” along with speeches by Issa and GOP icon Joe Arpaio, the hard-line sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona. The event will be held at Mission Valley’s Town and Country Hotel, owned by local Republican kingpin Terry Brown, admission is just $45.
