Ex–San Diego city councilman and Democratic assemblyman Ben Hueso, suspected by California’s Fair Political Practices Commission of chowing down gratis at a June 20, 2010, developer event, was let off the hook when he explained that the date was actually June 29 and he didn’t have time to grab any freebies.

“Shea Properties paid for food at the press conference,” recounts a November 14 letter to Hueso from the commission. “You state that you did not eat anything at the event since you had to be at a meeting in your Council Office at 1:30 p.m., while the press event, at which you were speaking, began at 12:30 p.m. and lasted for about one hour in a neighboring community.

"Copies of your calendar showing the relevant dates of activities on June 20, 2010, which was Father’s Day and spent with your children, and June 29, 2010, the date of the press release, were submitted with the explanation as well as the press release noting your speech. In light of this explanation, the Enforcement Division will not pursue the matter further.”
