Last March, the owner of Berry Happy Frozen Yogurt erected an ATM for his business on the busy corner of D Street and South Coast Hwy 101. But he didn’t put it inside his business. Instead he mounted a large, self-contained, freestanding ATM about 20 feet from his establishment’s front door, right next to the heavily traveled, southbound sidewalk.
Downtown revitalization fans called it ugly. The machine was covered in large “ATM” banners, and was placed directly under the lighted “Encinitas” sign that stretches across Highway 101, from the yogurt shop to the La Paloma Theatre.
As one yogurt shop customer put it [about the new ATM], “It's an ugly ‘Welcome to Encinitas’ monument.”
As the city has spent millions over the years in its Coast Highway streetscape beautification project for downtown Encinitas, improving sidewalks, parking, crosswalks, and landscaping, I questioned the placement of the ATM in a Reader Encinitas Holler post on March 27. I asked readers to share their comments about the ATM with city hall.
On Saturday, August 24, the ATM was removed. An employee of the yogurt shop said the company that installed it had not gotten a permit from the city. Encinitas Code Enforcement officers were not available for comment.
