Cabin in the Woods **
Terrorized teens in a desolate location become unwitting participants in a faith-based reality TV show. For 40 minutes we’re treated to an encyclopedic vivisection of everything wrong with contemporary horror movies. The overly clever script by Joss Whedon and director Drew Goddard eventually falls victim to its own satirization, but not before sufficiently broadsiding the genre. Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford steal the show as a pair of monastic geeks calling the shots from the director’s booth. With Kristen Connolly and Chris Hemsworth.
New on Blu-ray is Drew Goddard’s supremely fun horror-comedy The Cabin in the Woods. Fans of Goddard and his producer Joss Whedon will enjoy their legendary cleverness as well as some beloved actors from the Whedonverse making appearances. Stealing the show are Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins as a couple of working stiffs whose job isn’t quite what it seems. People who can spot the genre conventions being played with will adore this film. Made for horror fans!
Going back in time and across the Pacific, the entire Daimajin trilogy just got a glorious Blu-ray treatment. Originally from Daiei, the company that gave us Gamera, Daimajin is a unique genre mash-up of period samurai and giant monster movie. Unlike the Gamera films from the same decade, the Daimajin films are more serious in tone, featuring a giant statue of a folk God affecting the lives of the people around it.
