A fire was reported at 5 p.m. on November 11 at a two-story commercial building on the 3500 block of Hancock Street in the Point Loma/Sports Arena area. The conflagration soon drew over 60 firefighters to the scene.
Traffic was rerouted to an area behind the Valley View Casino Center as the fire raged and first responders made their way to the scene. The crowd of observers was told to clear the area, as the building that was engulfed in flames contained acetylene gas. A hazardous materials unit also attended the emergency. The roof collapsed. No injuries were reported.
Among the many adjacent buildings, one of the businesses firefighters broke into contained a potentially illegal marijuana-growing operation. A surfboard company and a custom-car business also sustained damage.
This morning, November 12, 10News reported that half a million dollars in damage had occurred.
