TJ Pedestrian Killed on Revolucion as Three Vehicles Collide

A Tijuana pedestrian was instantly killed Monday around 8:30am when he was struck by a delivery van caroming off a public bus, a collision ultimately involving three vehicles at the rain-slickened juncture of Revolucion and 3rd Street in Tijuana. A public transportation bus of the cream and green variety heading west on 3rd was hit by a red-light-running commercial van visiting the city from Rosarito, traveling south on Avenida Revolucion. The van then struck a pedestrian on the sidewalk, killing him, before being struck from behind by an orange and white Taxi Libre. The driver of the van, in a late report, stated that he had run a red light because his breaks had failed. He was subsequently taken into custody by Tijuana police until his legal status could be determined.

The pedestrian killed was a 30-year-old man standing on the corner waiting to cross, apparently, when the collision occurred. Upon being struck by the careening van, he was thrown several yards, mortally wounded, landing in front of a group of schoolchildren and persons going to work. First aid was administered immediately to the man, but it was evident, say witnesses, that he had been killed instantly, according to preliminary reports. The man’s body was moved to the sidewalk outside the Animale nightclub on Revolucion and covered with a plastic tarp, his blood pooling next to him.

Bystanders look on as investigators examine the scene.

Perhaps a dozen investigators arrived at the scene and questioned numerous witnesses in an attempt to figure out just what happened amidst the remnants of the three-vehicle collision. The large bus, left in the center of the intersection, showed virtually no damage, while the white commercial van wielded a crushed rim and flat tire on the right wheel, with large indentations on the van’s right side. The taxi, which was heading south on Revolucion, showed the most dramatic damage, with the front end shattered and splayed. The driver of the taxi appeared to be unhurt. Reports and information were not available in regard to just where the deceased pedestrian was struck nor the nature of his wounds. Following the investigation, his corpse was later picked up and removed by morgue attendants.
