San Diego County sheriff Bill Gore is looking for more than a few good women’s support garments to bolster the physiques of his (presumably) female prisoners, 2700 per year, to be exact. According to a February 8 request for quotation on a bulk order of “women’s brassieres (bras)” issued by the county’s purchasing department, the wearing apparel must be “Solid white in color”; “First quality only”; have “Two section cups” and “Crisscross support”; be 100 percent nylon with “a minimum of 2 hook and eye closures in back”; be single ply; and contain “no padding.” In addition, “Bra straps shall be sewn at all points and NOT glued anywhere.” Sizes will run from 32A all the way up to 50DD. “Bidder for Lot 1 is required to send [the] County two bra samples for testing, one each of size 34B and 38AA,” the notice says. “Bidder for Lot 2 is required to send [the] County two bra samples for testing, one of each size of 42D and 48DD.” Just who will conduct these tests goes unmentioned, but the samples “will be measured prior to initial washing,” then “washed and dried in three separate cycles.” To pass sheriff’s muster, “Bras must not fray or deform in any way during the testing (including the elastic).”
