Ocean Beach Entrance Sign Under Attack!

The OB Rag recently reported how bad things have gotten for the Ocean Beach entrance sign located on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard.

"The OB entryway sign is under attack — by termites and the weather. The wooden welcome was installed back in the mid-Eighties, but now nature has taken its toll. It needs to be replaced."

The Ocean Beach Town Council reportedly put out the call for some new designs. Some fans of North County's Surfing Madonna made an online comment to the effect that they hoped Mark Patterson, the Madonna artist, would consider creating the O.B. entryway sign.

On the Save the Surfing Madonna Facebook page, a commenter named Debra stated, "What would really be nice is if the artist that created the ‘Surfing Madonna’ would make something out of mosaic that will last."

Mark Patterson posted a reply: "Interesting idea — but per the news story, OB leaders have gone to a lot of work already and have a short list of artists for re-doing the sign. And who knows? maybe one of them will propose a mosaic! cuz that would be very cool."

Meanwhile, Jim Musgrove, president of the Ocean Beach Town Council, recently issued a call to the public to come up with new designs for the aging sign. 10News reported, "In all, 14 designs [have been] accepted. Ocean Beach officials will narrow it down to about five designs, with a public vote likely and possibly on Facebook."

Ocean Beach officials are scheduled to hold public meetings on the issue and hope to have the sign up by the end of this year.
