βThe cool thing about performing funny songs is that you know immediately if the audience is enjoying the tune based on their laughter,β says rapper/rocker Rob Deez. βTheyβll be laughing so hard at one line that theyβll miss the next. Iβm not worried about being pigeonholed as a novelty act...thereβs a lot of improvising in my act, and that appeals to the folks that wouldnβt otherwise be interested in what Iβm doing.β
San Diego has a long tradition of comedic music, from Frank Zappa and his protΓ©gΓ© Wild Man Fischer to the Rugburns (βHitchhiker Joeβ), the Beat Farmers (βHappy Boyβ), the Bugs (βDave Navarroβs Goatee Fucking Sucksβ), Grammatical B (βDonβt Ask Donβt Intelβ), and βthe Mexican Elvisβ El Vez, as well as JosΓ© Sinatra, Adam Gimbel, and Mojo Nixon, whose comedic cut βStuffinβ Marthaβs Muffinβ got him banned from MTV for singing about one of their VeeJayβs vajayjay.
Local duo Pony Death Ride (βBreaking Up with You Is Gonna Be Funβ) is recording a new full-length, with songs concerning fans of anthropomorphic funny-animal sex (βFurriesβ) and the former lead singer of the Smiths (βI Think My Boyfriendβs Gay For Morrisseyβ). βI do worry about being pigeonholed as a βnoveltyβ act,β says Joe MacAskill, βbecause people sometimes underestimate the amount of thought and time that goes into writing songs like ours. Thatβs why we incorporate the punk-rock element and a variety of musical styles, to show that weβre versed in our craft.β
His wife and bandmate Jaye MacAskill disagrees. βI donβt mind being stereotyped, because Iβm a big fan of old-school variety entertainment, like vaudeville and burlesque in the pre-WWII era and TV programming like the Carol Burnett Show and the Muppets. Itβs difficult to stand out as a performer among so many other people doing more or less the same thing, like βrockβ or βcountry.β Thereβs more diversity within the novelty acts.β
Rob Deez is working on a new album, with planned tracks to include βSelf Deprecating Love Song,β βCheck Into Cash,β and βHairy Palms.β βAll Iβm trying to do is entertain people. And everyone loves to laugh,β says Deez, who appears April 14 at the Lazy Hummingbird in Ocean Beach.
