The criminal justice research arm of SANDAG (San Diego Association of Governments) released a crime report today, September 16.
The data was a mixed bag for people who live in San Diego County: “While overall crime rates in San Diego County have continued to decline, the number of homicides reported in the region in the first half of 2011 was up 65 percent compared to the same period in 2010.”
South Bay’s contribution to the statistics were highest in Chula Vista. In Chula Vista there were no homicides in the first half of 2010 but there were five in the first half of 2011. "Larceny under $400" was the only other category in which Chula Vista had significant crime growth.
National City’s homicide went down from two in the first half of 2010 to one in the first half of 2011. However, statistics for rape and larceny over $400 increased.
Imperial Beach had no homicides by mid-year 2010 and none again by mid-year 2011. Residential burglaries and larcenies over $400 increased slightly. Imperial Beach does not have its own police department; the city contracts with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
