Shortcuts: Lemon Grove to Casa de Mañana near the Children’s Pool in 40 minutes

Who: Jan Davis

Car: 2007 Chevy HHR. Mileage about 41,000 so far. Gets very good mileage on the open road. I have driven 600 miles to my sister’s house in Sonoma County on less than three tanks of gas. I have never clocked it around town. But it takes about $48 to fill it up these days! That’s what my first monthly car payment was way back when!

Previous cars: 2003 PT Cruiser with a turbo engine. Not such good mileage.

Drive where? From Lemon Grove to La Mesa, Prudential California Realty office across I-8 from Anthony’s, a brutal five-mile drive.

Cheapest gas? Arco!

What’s wrong with your car? Nothing except it’s always dirty. We have very rude birds in our trees!

Listen to when driving? XM/Sirius Classical Pops station or KYXY.

Cell phone? Sometimes if I don’t see any cops. I also have a hands-free thingy.

Hitchhikers? No way! I’m not stupid!

Speeding tickets? About five years ago, on I-5 in Del Mar. I was doing 80 like everybody else but I was the winner of Officer Somebody’s last ticket given out during his shift that day.

Accidents? I was rear-ended in 1967 in Long Beach. I was 20 and a teenaged boy driving his girlfriend’s father’s brand-new Chevy Malibu hit the back of my 1960 Chevy station wagon. Needless to say, I ended up the winner of that one!

Worst Traffic? I-15!

Most changed streets? I guess I would say the most changed street I can think of is Mission Gorge Road going through Santee. Anybody who has been away for 25–30 years would never recognize it!

Favorite drive? To Julian on a sunny weekday with very little traffic.

Least favorite? I-15 morning or late afternoon. UGH!

Shortcut? When I worked in La Jolla several years ago, I would listen to the traffic reports on the radio in the morning and if there were accidents along 94 west, 5 north and La Jolla Parkway, I would take the following route and it would get me from my home in Lemon Grove to Casa de Mañana near the Children’s Pool in 40 minutes: north on College Avenue, left on Montezuma Road, right onto Fairmount, under I-8 onto Mission Gorge, left on Friars Road, right on Morena Blvd., left on Garnet, right on Soledad Mountain Road, a left onto La Jolla Scenic Drive right after the dreaded cross, a quick right on Nautilus, right on Fay, right on Prospect, and left on Jenner.
