“Well, I kicked him right in the head,” said witness Steven Kane, recounting the day he chased down a man seen shooting a gun at schoolchildren last October. The construction worker testified for about 30 minutes on Monday, March 7, in a hearing to determine if there is sufficient evidence for Brendan Liam O’Rourke to stand trial for attempted murder.
It was during the noon lunch break at Kelly Elementary School, Kane said, when he “heard gunfire.” He walked away from pouring cement to see a man with a gun in his hand. “He was trying to reload it,” said Kane. “He was dropping bullets or casings — he was dropping 'em all over the place.”
Kane described chasing the armed man as he attempted to flee. He said he pulled the man to the ground and straddled him. He said he was then concerned because he had lost sight of the revolver. Kane described taking things out of the man’s jacket, including an unopened box of hollow-point bullets, a lighter, and a flashlight. Kane said it was only a “couple minutes” before a Carlsbad police officer appeared and took control of the shooter.
