In an effort to curb certain citizens’ tendency to toss gum on city streets, Tijuana businesses, under the auspices of city hall and the police department, have posted placards that warn of fines for sidewalk gum-dumping.
The city has paid whopping sums to resurface streets and create new sidewalks in the past few years. It hasn’t taken long for thoroughfares to become littered with gum. Some bar owners and restaurateurs, most notably on Avenida Revolución, began a daily scrape-off of the discarded blobs.
Despite business owners’ efforts (including sections of sidewalk varnished with some kind of acrylic to thwart the sticky chicle), the accumulation didn’t stop. The signs indicate that police will now arrest, prosecute, and fine offenders caught in the act of gum-chucking.
